Hello All,
Very first post here ... thanks so much for the opportunity and for such an informative forum. I've attempted to find an answer to my query via search engine but i just can't seem to sort out all I've read.

I found a very clean Canon 100mm F/3.5 (II) locally and seeing as all I have currently is a 35mm Summicron and a 50mm Summitar to go w/ my M4, I thought this lens would be a welcome addition.

My question is exactly what kind of adapter do I need? And what are the "hidden" implications of using this lens on my Leica?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Best Regards,
Mike

The screw-to-M adapter you need is the one which brings up the 90 mm frame lines. To be on the safe side, you might compose your shots a little "loose". No hidden implications.

In my mind I would compose a little tight as the 100mm lens will capture less than a 90mm lens. So, assume 100% of what you see in the 90mm framelines will be on the film, nothing more. Experience will help you adjust this thinking in time.

And hidden implications? It is a very nice lens, you should be very pleased with your results from it.

Quite often, Leica body owners with non-Leitz/Leica glass come in for some abuse from the Volk (blah blah blah blah "glow", blah blah blah "craftsmanship") but otherwise, no problems at all.

Welcome aboard.

Thank you all ...
Guess by "hidden implications" I meant things such as frame lines or I've read things about OOF at infinity .... forgot about The Border Patrol.

I poked around that auction site and found some relatively inexpensive adaptors (40 clams) Wonder if they'd do the trick?

Sherry has my M4 and Summicron as I type. When I get it back I'll post some pics as well as the story of how a very humble fooltime guitar/pedal steel slave for the obscure (me) ever managed to obtain such a delicious light box.

Thank you again fellas' for the help,
m

Mike, your 90 mm finder will have a wider angle of view than your 100 mm lens. That is, you will record less on film than you see through the finder. You could either compose the shot as you want it and then take a half step or so back -- or you could, when composing, have a bit extra on all four sides. This is what I meant by "loose". This any better, Rover?

Mukul ... seems logical to me, thanks for the help.

Once camera comes home I'll get a chance to try lens out.

Leaving for Ireland this evening to play the Kilkenny festival ... A little dissapointed I won't have Leica along but am bringing little Yashica GSL in it's place. Thinking of bringing 124G as well but still on the fence ...

Does anyone have an opinion on cheaper LTM to M adapters to be found on auction site?

Best regards to all,
Mike

Often - you do get what you pay for with these. Especially with longer lenses, a slight misalighment, or incorrect shim width will render your lens unusable at infinity, and unpredictable elsewhere. On a very wide lens, you can cheat a bit since you're covered by DOF. But not with a 100 or 135.

FWIW - The CV adapters are very good for the price.

I have the canon 100mm 3.5. Damn sharp wide open, tiny, light piece of glass. No problem on my M4, you need a 90mm adapter Leitz I prefer. I got one 50mm voigtlander adapter that bring the 35mm, what a ripoff (bought it used in the classified, seemed the orginal owner never noticed it cause was using bessa cameras)

Bjorn is the man to help you, Mike. In practical terms the difference between 90 and 100 is so small that you will seldom need to bother about it. Most people in any case leave a little room all around for slide mounts and the strips cropped out by automatic printing machines, whose gates are smaller than 36 by 24.

Voiglander adapters come in three flavours to bring up (1) 50/75 (2) 35/135 or (3) 28/90 framelines. I have at least one of each and they all work fine on my M.
