An auction just finished on ebay with an unusual serial # on the lens

I have recorded more 50mm f/1.9 Serenar lenses with an Extra Digit (ED) in the serial number than any other focal length. This is the 10th lens on my database. As you can see the # on the lens is #554550 and is on a model III camera. In my book on pg 98, I mention the numbers of lenses I have recorded and amongst those is #554560. if you take the "0" away then it is ONE digit away from the one in the auction . #554560 I recorded in 2002 it also was on a model III. Just about all the ED lenses I have recorded are in batches and with consecutive #'s. My theory is that these ED lenses are replacements for camera/lens combinations that have been misplaced or lost during delivery to the agents or shops that had purchased them.
