It's a close-up lens, with parallax correction for the rangefinder. Kind of like a Rolleinar/Rolleipar set for TLR's.

The Auto-Up allows rangefinder coupled close focus with a normal lens.

An amazing coincidence: I had the top one for years, and by pure luck a dear old friend, my best friend in my camera world, who is primarily a Nikon RF collector, got some Canon equipment, including a Canon L1. So we Skyped to see his L1, and he read me the serial number...and I looked at my L1 and asked him to read his number again. And then we just looked at each other with big smiles.
