Canon Pixma MP 990

OK, in the perfect case of buying before researching......

I am now the owner of a Canon 990 printer. I needed a new scanner/printer, and want the ability to print photos, and this seemed like a good idea since it was on the shelf in front of me, and I did read half the article about it in Shutterbug (?).

So, is anyone using this printer? I don't do (yet) a lot of photo printing at home so I don't expect true professional quality, but for a 5x7 or 8x10 I suspect it will be fine.

I will also be buying a new Mac Book Pro and using either CS4 or I may upgrade to CS5. Nikon CoolScan for film scanning.

I have the MP600 cousin. It prints photos and if you're not after stunning results like you'd get from a dedicated photo printer then it's fine.

Right now it's the only printer I have since I ditched my Epson last year because the heads were dried up and repairing it cost more than a new printer. I miss the Epson, which gave me a million different paper stock options with its driver. The Canon (at least mine) seems to have a limited selection in the Print menu. I'd also say the colors from my Epson were more vibrant.

I'm by no means skilled at printing but the same file out of a dedicated Canon photo printer (the Pixma Pro 9000) looks nicer than the all-in-one MPxxx.

How is it in printing B&W photos?
I heard colors are good enough for an all-in-one.

This should be a good printer for all practical purposes. I've myself the MP640, which in other (printing) respects is similar to MP990 but does not have the grey ink for BW printing. Even without it I'm quite happy with the quality from the 640 - it exceeds most commercial prints quality, high end printing services obviously excluded. I've been also happy with the BW prints.

The only things I'm not very happy about my MP640 are the rather small ink cartridges which translates to higher operating cost, and the small number of paper profiles with the driver, like Bobonli mentions (Maybe the MP990 is different in this respect?)

Sahe69, you are right.
I bought MP550 "cheaper the 560" and the b&w prints are satisfactory once printed in grayscale. However, as many has mentioned the profiles are limited.

I'll calibrate my monitor and printer once the device arrives and I'll see how it turn out to be because color needs more adjusting to get them right in each print.

I have the MP980 which I find fine for printing quick snaps. B&W is OK but make sure you buy extra grey tanks when you can. I've yet to see them in stores, even the one where I bought the printer in the first place.
