Canon QL17 (new) vs. QL17 G-III = Differnt Lens Elements?

I noticed a difference between the instruction manuals for these two cameras. Here are quotes from their respective lens technical data sections:


Canon QL17 (new): "6 elements in 4 components, with four rare earth glasses"

Canon QL17 G-III: "6-element 4-group construction, with four newly designed glasses"


Did Canon drop the use of rare earth glass with the introduction of the G-III model?

It's hard to say what Canon did mean by newly designed glasses - new compared to previous model, or to common praxis of building lenses or what. And yes, probably it's easier to say NEW than LESSER especially when this is related to sales.

I don't know, but I have found the QL17l (new) to perform better than most QL17 GIII's. I've attributed it to the larger production, and deviation from camera to camera. I've had 4 QL17l's and over a dozen QL17 GIII's. The GIII and QlL17l that I currently own are very close, but the GIII is the "Pick of the litter".

I have serviced both types of QL17 cameras, and the arrangement and shape of the lens elements look the same. But there is an obvious difference in the lens coatings. I have swapped the front elements between the cameras, and they seem to fit okay, but I haven't actually film tested to see if there is a difference.

On a side note, does anyone have a recommendation for someone who can do an overhaul on a Canonet QL17 (new)? I've got one I'd like to have brought back to life by a pro. I'm located in the US.
