Hi all! I just got my first legit Rangefinder camera, a Canon IVSB in amazing shape, I feel like I got a steal at 50$ Im already looking into a Canon 28mm f3.5 lens with VF or a Leica Summaron 35mm f3.5

My questions start with a different lens tho!
Im also currently looking at a Canon 50mm f2.8 lens in the newer style, like those typically found on Canon 7/P with the black fine ribbed collar.
Anyone use this lens? is it any good compared to the f1.8 version?

Mostly looking for a decent 50mm capable of good contrast and color will this affordable little guy fit the bill?

Also ive been looking into the Rapidwinder made for this camera, one of the perks that got me to bid was the option for this trigger winder.
What is the average price of one of these? Ide be looking for one in rough/user shape or even broken to repair. Any good sites to find these and other canon rf stuff used?

Ive been all over eBay.

Thanks for any reply!

Also ordering some new covering on Cameraleather.com to give it some personality 😛

I previously had a IV-Sb. It's a remarkable camera. My advice would be to stick with the lens you have. All Canon LTM lenses are very good. They also all seem to collect haze so I'd keep an eye on that because haze really decreases contrast and overall image quality. Fortunately they are very easy to clean by yourself.

I cannot comment on Rapidwinder. There are eBay sellers in Japan who specialize in Canon LTM gear. Jiri_e is one of them. He has a good reputation. Dan Goldberg has some Canon gear too and Pacific Rim Camera just to name a few.

It would probably be cheaper to pick up a Canon V-T or Canon VI-T with the built in trigger winder rather than buy one for the IV-SB.

On the Canon 50/2.8: the rear surface behind the aperture is prone to damage from etching. Look for a chrome 50/1.8, which used a different glass. If you get a Black Canon lens, be sure to inspect it before committing to it.

Okay, have to add...

DANGER! DANGER! Canon 50/2.8 has been damaged due to caustic lubricants! Optical path is compromised!

The Canon winders work quite well, are built like a tank, and quite heavy. Usually sell for around $200 or so on US eBay.

YES! B-9 as in "Lost in Space" your the first to get the reference.
Great info, It appears the 50/2.8 copy im looking into doesnt suffer from the etching issue, looks very clean and unlike most of the lenses ive been looking into its mostly free of haze. Isnt it as simple as leaving the lens out in some good sun? to remove the haze.

Im currently waiting on a confirmation for the deal that would land me the 28mm, and im crossing my fingers, ide really love to have it.

As for the Rapidwinder, ive seen them on ebay as cheap as 275$ on one of those BIN OBO auctions, ive made offers as high as 150$ and been denied.
Seem's a little steep for some of them, in their condition. Ill proly wait for an actual auction or maybe if im lucky find one and possibly some lenses at this years Photorama in Troy, Michigan.

Im also looking at a few Leica Summaron 35mm f3.5's, I have to admit its been one of my dream lenses since I was a kid. Even if its lowly compared to other Leica glass.

Thanks again for all the great info! Cant wait for some more responses!

It might be cheaper to buy a winder attached to a camera, and then sell the camera and lens later. Try to find one with the knurled black aluminum handle attached- makes it a lot easier to hold and operate! If you can't find the original, a substitut
e works just as well.

I have a great screen shot Avatar on my flickr, but it wouldnt let me use it here, I may have to do some more tweeking to get it to work properly.

@Dexdog: I have actually never seen an auction with a camera and winder. I never even actually seen one of these camera's in the real world! Mine should be in the post tomorow.
Ive yet to procure a lens, as my camera did not come with one.

But I did find a nice Serenar 35mm f3.5 that looks a awful lot like the Summaron minus filter threads. Im going to assume they are virtually the same. Most of the research ive managed to do suggests most of the Canon Glass is equally as good as Leica glass of the period, some lenses possibly better.

I think a big part of how I will collect the pieces to make this a user, is that im not looking for something that matches. So as far as having Canon glass of the same model year or even close to it isnt important at all to me. Im planning on ordering some funky leather to recover the camera with. Along with posting my Nikon F3 up for sale to help get the winder and a lens or two. No sense in having two 35mm bodies. Since im not shooting much small format anymore. I prefer the RF's to the SLR's its alot more fun and Ive found shooting with my Kiev 4 that I can get away with more candids due to the silent nature of the Rangefinder camera's.

If anyone has any kind of LTM lenses for sale, ide love to check them out! Im open to most lenses under 90mm wouldnt hurt to message me!

Thanks for all the views?!

Just bought a Leica Summitar 50mm f2 from Adorama in "X" condition. I understand that this is their equiv. to KEH.com's bargain or ugly grade.

In the descript it claims the lens suffers from haze and light sratches. But list's no other faults. Im hoping itll be salvagable! considering I only spent 45$ shipped there's no way I could be dissapointed. I was originally planning to bid on a similiar lens on eBay with light scratches minor hazing and a frozen Iris, same Summitar 50/2 collaps. but once the bid hit 60$ with more than a day to go I found my order and grabbed it up quickly!

Anyone have some info on how to properly service this lens?
a link to a repair manual would be great!

I dont plan to send it out for a CLA but rather to attempt this on my own.
