Bottom line, I can buy a low count Olympus e-420 with the small kit 14-42 lens that is not a whole lot bigger than the G11 for $350-400. Smallest DSLR w/zoom, prior to the e620.
Don't kid yourself. I have had a G9 and an E-620. The E-420 with lens is small for a DSLR but it is a LOT bigger than a G9/11. I do love the E-620, though...

I have one, and just yesterday, I installed the grip and the lensmate filter holder.
Even without the filterholder installed, adding the grip does not make the camera thicker: the grip sits under the level of the retracted lens. The filterholder adds about 3mm thickness, but it still fits in my small Case Logic bag that always hangs on my side. I'm very happy with it.
