...well it doesn't really have a mode called that but it has a mode called 'Nostalgic' with few options. One of them produces high contrast black and white pictures with heavy grain. I kind of like it instead of the dull standard output.

This is where digital can compete with film - in case of images that look like pushed Tri X in Rodinal. If you shoot this at higher ISO, it will actually look even closer to film. I find this quite an interesting alternative to actuallu bothering with development. However, it has nothing to do with HCB, more with Ralph Gibson.

Well done, I like the set a lot.

I'm sorry but digital grain still can't stand in film grain's shadow, IMHO. It just looks (and is) artificial.

It's not grain it's noise, and they are quite different, if you want grain.. use film..

good set, however i'd have to say that I don't really like the "noise/grain". It just looks blotchy and like it doesn't belong. That's my my opinion though!

Very nice shots, very well composed.
But -- as we've heard on every "film vs. digital" thread -- it seems the tonality is a bit harsh. For example, shot #1 has a lot of 100% black and 100% white, and not so many midtones. As a result there is little detail in the highlights and shadows.

1) I like the pics, full stop.
2) To me it doesn't look like grain, it really does just look like noise. Maybe some day people will appreciate noise as a valid aesthetic in its own right (maybe some already do) - but to me noise and grain look very different, and I prefer grain every time.

Artificial means man made...so film is artificial as well.
To the OP: HCB mode? HCB never used very high contrast that I can remember.

HCB mode is a joke and was meant to refer to the April fool's joke about the new auto focus rangefinder having that kind of mode.

Those S90 pictures are a very crude example of digital 'grain'. I'm not sure it can be called noise either as they are mostly if not all ISO 80 shots and noise/grain is added by S90 software (and not very well).
I bet I can make digital pics emulating grain and no one would no if they have (digital) noise or (film) grain. Give me a day or two and I will present you a challenge
I just need to dig out some film scans from my archives and add noise to couple of digital shots.

Actually, man-made is only one of several meanings of the word artificial. Look it up, and let's stop discussing semantics.

Very nice images. I am thinking of getting an s90 but I am bothered by the lack of a viewfinder and hot shoe. I guess it's the price you pay for making it small.

I like the first one. The noise and high contrast are suitable to the subject. The others, not so much.

I also like the shots fine, but not the noise. If you had taken these w/ film they would have looked much better. Horses for courses. Digital and B&W is not a good combination. Tri-X properly shot and developed is fantastic. The difference is like night and day.

Those are cool, very nice! It's interesting to watch the film only folks get more and more insecure are time goes by and digital technology advances. I don't think the OP ever said that this was better than B&W film yet several people have gone out of their way to say how much better film is. Hmm....
