I got tired of waiting while my M8 is being repaired so I bought a pocket cam to kill the time.

It's easy to shoot good looking high ISO pictures in the studio with good lighting. Here is a small set of pictures I have taken on my trip to work:

At the moment it is dark almost around the clock here in Finland so image stabilisation, high ISO and wide apertures are all needed.

Here is one sample from the set:

Excellent demonstration of the camera's capabilities. I have been playing around with my S90, and have been impressed by the very low noise levels in low light and high ISO conditions. (However, I will spare RFF the ordeal of looking at my lousy pics.)

Really interesting
is the camera that I intend to buy in the near future.
It sounds simple, discreet and efficient!:)

shows real bad distortion in wide angel...

that is easily fixed with software. Does it automatically if shot in JPG, and easily fixed in Photoshop or similar program if shot in RAW.

Not a bad compromise for such a tiny lens/body combination

Thanks for posting. The S90 is at the top of my list to replace my wife's little sony p&s. Your gallery seals it.

Same here. Her B-day is coming up. My concern was shutter lag, but I have read that it's not too bad for a P&S. Love the idea of RAW, 2.0, and low noise high ISO in a tiny camera.

The original poster's picture is very nice, and demonstrates the S90's unique ability.

I've pondered it, but usually camera size is not a concern for me. So, I was coming to the conclusion that for the extra $50 to $75, I'd get the features here, plus more with the G11.

However, yesterday, I went to Best Buy and played with the G11 and the S90. The G11 is somewhat bigger and much less discrete. I think the articulating screen and slightly longer zoom is going to swing me toward the G11.

The smaller camera size of the S90 is seductive however.

The other option (and I just read a more positive review of it) is the new Sony WX1. It seems to be drawing really mixed opinions however. Doesn't have the sophistication of the S90 but may take better low-light shots and both of those things would likely be good for my wife.

I got the G11 this week for the articulated screen too. Loved it on my old G5 and then I bought the G7, itself a nice camera, which didn't have it and I missed it. I reckon the S90 is a decent camera too from the reiews I've seen but as I have an LX3 and a GRDIII already, 'small and compact' are covered. I wanted the G11 instead of a DSLR. Now I have it my Oly E420 and pancake lens and my tiny Fuji F30 are going up for sale shortly.

Are you saying the Sony may take better low light photos than the S90?

Yes. But I have yet to see something that makes me sure of it. The WX1 uses Sony's Exmor R sensor which is supposed to produce less noise. It also has a "twilight mode" that (IIRC) takes several exposures quickly and combines them to help with noise in low-light situations.

The camera was trashed by DCResource and praised by Photography Blog.

Some users are reporting very pleasing results.

Some of what you give up with one of these cameras you get with the other. EG better movie mode with the Sony, RAW shooting with the Canon.

Still thinking Canon at this point as I would like the option to shoot RAW and make use of more advanced controls even if my wife doesn't need them.

I bought the S90 about a week ago and love it
Have taken some low light photos on my way to work last week and was very pleased with the images up to 800 iso

Im thinking about shooting more digital and less film now.
Too bad too because i just perchased a beautiful Konica Hexar AF a few weeks ago and thinking of selling the Hexar anyone interested?

I was wondering about the WX1 as well. It was either that or the S90, and I couldn't find much info in the WX1. Both seemingly have appealing features for a compact point and shoot.

Except for a whole stop faster lens.

Jeez - that s90 is soooo tempting.

Now I continue to hold off the LX3 and the D-Lux 4 because who knows what else is around the corner and a p&s isn't so much a necessity as much of a convenience.

The s90's fast lens, small, slim body is fantastic. I haven't shot with a Canon since my days with the G2.

Can't wait to see more samples at low-light and high ISOs.
