I was thinking of maybe somewhere along the line buying a Canon screwmount just to see if they are nice cameras. The J-mount (non-compatible with other L39 lenses, right?) - which models have it? Anything else to look out for or to avoid?

The models made after World War II, from the late 1940s, are compatible with Leica Mount.

The prices on the early ones are driven by the collector market, and you will know which ones they are!

I am trying to get my head around it, but this quote

"The thread pitch of the "semi-universal" mount was closer to 26 tpi, with thread construction close enought to the Leica "universal" mount to be interchangable. Canon went to fully standard 39mm x 26 tpi mount with models produced in late 1951. "

found on this page: http://www.huffman.tk/id46.html does make me a bit vary.

Should I read this as the III version (early one) I was looking at, has the "semi-universal" thread, yet should work with any Leica Mount lens?

All of the Canons are good quality, very reliable cameras. Favorites include the Canon P and the 7, but if you want a Barnack-style camera, the IVSB is a good choice. The only ones that are incompatible with LTM are the first several versions produced during and immediately after WW2, and as Brian says, they are quite expensive (usually several thousand $) Basically, this includes only the S and J series

Thanks for the info, guys! I was thinking about a Barnack-styled one. I once had a Canon P with a black 35/2 (about 650 euros, ten years ago) and yes, I miss that one sometimes. I've used the Barnack Leicas and found I could live with the squinty finders, so I suppose a III or IV could work fine.
