Canon sells New Rangefinders!!

The Canon 7-D.

I heard it is called the Canonet 14 and it only shoots b/w and is setto a max of 36 exposures at 8mp. It is reported to have been a jointaffair executed with former Yashica engineers and it includes lensgeometry based on the Yashinon 45mm seen on the Lynx 14e.

Imagine a digital full-frame RF from Canon, based more-or-less on the 7s, with (say) the 12.8MP sensor of the 5D and M-mount. One of the available lenses would be an M-mount version of the 50/0.95. Manual exposure or aperture priority. Available in black (or chrome). In fact, they wouldn't need to offer any other lenses initially, because one could choose between Leica, Zeiss, KM or CV glass - maybe even Nikon with adapters (not sure about this), not to mention FSU LTM stuff with adapters. Same shutter as the 5D -- that's almost as quiet as a Leica even with the mirror slap. Cost would probably be in the same range as an (analog) MP or M7. Isn't it time ... ?

It was a good theory up until you forgot to mention Canon lenses.

Sure Canon used to have many other RF lenses, but they would need to update them to offer them new on the market with a camera like this. I merely suggested they could start with the 50/0.95 as an offering that would be unique. They could also offer others, no question. Most lenses for digital cameras are getting at least some additional coating to reduce flare, for example.

the other day I was thinking about this actually. If canon came out with another rangefinder, stuck some decent technology in it like focus confirmation, faster shutter etc etc and kept the price down I bet they could sell a lot of them to rangefinder lovers
