I am, as I am sure many have in the past, trying to find an acceptable hood/filter setup for this quirky 40mm setup. My question is this...

Do any of you know or can you measure the outside diameter of the from of your Serenar 50/1.8? I am looking to use a clamp on adapter but the canon ones are scarce so if I can find an alternative I will. I have looked into cameraquest's offerings, and although I like the hood it does not solve the filter problem.

I have also looked on *bay and have concocted a setup from the seller "heavystar" but would prefer something more simple than an 40-40.5mm adapter, 40.5mm filter, and then a 40.5mm vented hood on top of that.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Would this hood work? And if it will fit will it block the VF on my Leica III/IIIF?

Yes, I have this hood and it does fit my 50/1.8. The key is the 42mm push on adaptor ring which slips on the front of the lens. I use a 42mm slip on ring and the same hood for my Canon 50, FSU J8, CZ Sonnars...... it is a handy piece of kit.

that Canon hood blocks the bottom 1/3 of the VF on my Leica IIIf when using the Canon 50/f1.8 lens, so a 50mm SBOOI finder is necessary.
most times I do not use a hood with this setup as it tends to make a small jewel like camera like the IIIf a bit bulky.

the cutout or vent is the left side when seen from the back, so it works better on the intended Canon VF than a Leica IIIf VF.

The square hood works better on my Canon IIF than on my Leica IIIf. It blocks too much of the finder on the IIIf. It works really well when I use my Nikkor 50/2 on my M4-2. The S42 ring does allow other Series 6 hoods to fit.

that is my exact opinion on the square Canon hood Victor.
it is better left for the camera it was made for.

I forgot to mention that the only hoods that work on the screw mount Leicas are the small ones (FISON, FOOKH) and the folding barn door type for the Summitar. Everything else I've tried blocks the viewfinder and rangefinder windows to some degree. Who needs hoods anyway?

I went with the easy answer and use a 40/40.5 adapter, 40.5 filter, and heavystar hood. I suppose I could use the Canon hood as I use an SBOOI anyway....

After using the 50 Elmar and CV 35 Skopar, the 50/1.8 seems huge/front heavy, and the heavystar hood isn't a big deal. It's not elegant, tho.

Well after reading your advice I went with the heavystar setup, and he is selling a "tilted" and vented hood now, hopefully this will work well. I can always get one of the Canon 50/1.9 hoods as ritzcamera.com has 4 in stock, pacific rim camera has the round Canon 50/1.8 hood but I read some posts that said since it is not vented it blocks the VF even worse. Thanks for your help and advice.
