Canon Serenar 85mm 1.9

I just picked up a Canon Serenar 85mm 1.9 lens for my canon p rangefinder(auction). but the base is too large and its not screw mount. I was under the impression(wrongly) that all Serenar were screw mounts

it is in really nice shape, so don't want to get rid of it ,, is there an adapter that make it a screw mount?

Check to see if it came with a Leica M adapter attached.
If it did just unscrew the adapter and the lens should screw on to your Canon P.

it does look like an adapter .. it even has a leica cap..

It should come off fairly easy, it is easier to unscrew the lens when it is mounted on an M camera but a clean rag covering the M adaptor as you hold the lens with one hand and turn the rag covered adapter with the other hand have loosened the most stubborn M adaptors attached to an LTM lens that I ever came across, unless (Yikes!) the previous owner used glue or Lok-Tite on the threads, unlikely but it can happen.

Bonus that you got a 40 dollar M adapter with the lens.

That worked!!! so I got a better deal than I thought.. subtracting the worth of the adapter

It reads on the adapter "M2 M3"

You are welcome, glad it worked out for you.

If it is a genuine used Leitz M adapter, those sell for a bit more than 40 dollars at camera shows in Toronto.

Sell the adapter on e-bay or elsewhere to recoup some of the cost of the lens. Or keep it to be prepared for the day when you own a Leica or some other camera that uses M-mount lenses. It's inevitable.
