Hello all.

I've recently purchased a lovely Canon 50mm f/1,5 ltm lens, but have had no luck tracking down the companion lens shade. Any leads as to where I might find one are greatly appreciated.

Thanx in advance!

The official right Canon shade for that lens is not very common, I got one in the 1990s at a camera show and it was expensive to buy back then. I have also used a Walz series VI for Canon adapter along with a Kodak lens hood and it worked fine with no vignetting when the lens is used at f1.5

I have an old Canon chrome 50/1.5 hood. It's a series-style hood, it screws into a series filter ring, which you screw onto the lens. No idea where or when I got it, or what it cost. Nice unit, and being chrome, it matches the 50/1.5 lens well. I imagine, being chrome, it could be a collectable. Whatever, it works well.

I recommend the Series adapter and a cheap screw in hood from online (ebay, usually from China). I've done this and works just fine. I also have the orignal hoods for my Canon 50's, its the same concept almost exactly.

I too just purchased a Canon 50mm f/1.5 and needed a shade. I first tried a 40mm to 40.5mm step up ring and a 40.5mm UV filter & shade. It vignettes in the corners. Without the shade it still vignettes. Rats. I decided that I needed to hunt down the original shade.

There was one on eBay but it was $95. I checked Kevin's Camera and he was asking $150 for one. I bit the bullet and grabbed the one on eBay as it was complete with the leather case. The Post Office sent it all over the country but it did arrive. Much to my surprise it takes Series VII filters rather than Series VI. Well it works fine and it seems to be the best solution around.

Good luck!

I found a simple vented screw-in 40mm hood. I does the job, but I hate the look of it. Sonnar Brian: Yes, I saw the eBay hood and I'm tempted to grab it... even at $109 .

Thanx everyone.

I also have the original hood which accepts series VII filters. It's too big and therefore not as effective as it could be. I therefore switched to the series VI version that fits the Canon 50mm f1.8. It worked fine but I found a Kodak series VI hood that I preferred. Once polished it looked better on the lens. It is 55mm OD and 15mm in length (excluding its thread). It does not vignette and I am very pleased with it. Series VI filters are available on Ebay but sometimes you have to be patient.

Turns out I already own (for some reason) a Kodak Series VI hood. Just purchased a 42mm Series VI adapter. Thanx for the info!

I have posted a photo of my arrangement (Canon 50mm f1.5 lens + Kodak series VI hood) in the Gallery. I don't know how to display it in this thread because I can't find a URL. I polished the hood. Even though its aluminium it is quite a good match.

The Series VI 42mm adapter ring arrived today. It works perfectly! Thank you for this elegant solution.
