Canon VL (or V series) Questions

I shot a roll of film using a Canon VL last weekend, to try it out. I was able to figure out the operation, but I have a few questions, and I hope someone can help. I liked the rotating viewfinder feature, but what does the 'RF' setting do? Is it a high magnification for critical focus? Also, what is the purpose of the 'FPM and XF' switch? It's a nice camera, but the owner knew very little about it. TIA.

Yes, the "RF" position on the switchable viewfinder is a high-magnification position for more critical focusing. The physical baselength of the L-series' rangefinder is fairly short, so this magnified view is helpful when using lenses such as the 50/1.2 and 85/1.5.

The FPM/XF switch varies the synchronization setting for using various types of flashbulbs. Since if you use flash with it at all, you'll probably be using electronic flash, the appropriate setting is XF.

The "RF" position is very close to a 135mm lens' field of view. I have used it for such on the V-T and VI-T.

Thanks, airds! Yes, it is very similar—other than the Mg vs RF labeling.

My next question was whether the RF/Mg setting had a focal length equivalent, Brian. I didn't try my Canon 135 lens on the VL. I shot strictly with the 50/1.8. I didn't even think of it. 🙁 Maybe next time.
