Canonet advance lock defunct

I just bought a Canonet QL17 (not G-III) and got it in the mail last week. I haven't had a chance to shoot any film through it yet, but I noticed some strangeness..

On my other QL17, you close the back and the film counter is on "S." You cock the advance four times to get to frame one. At that point the advance locks into place until the shutter is fired.

On this new Canonet, that never happens. It'll advance til the end of the roll if you keep cocking it. I usually carry the camera with my thumb under the advance, so that's a problem. Further, I'm sure I'll end up with a lot of blank frames when I accidently advance twice.


I'm assuming this is not normal, correct? Are there any obvious problems this could be stemming from? I removed the top plate and can't see anything that sticks out like a sore thumb, so that's the extent of my repair knowledge.

Hi! I got the same problem with a recently bought Canonet QL17. Did anybody fix the problem so far? I'd be thankful for any suggestions...

I swear that somewhere on the web is a diagram on how to fix this exact problem.

However, I don't see it in my bookmarks of Canon stuff.

So, finding it will be an exercise for the student. :)

I purchased one on a whim like yours only for it was a black G-III model doing the same thing. After dismantling it I had found an extra film indicator lens stuck in the lower section of the film lever locking arm. It had to be in there since new and took sometime to get to the bottom area. After removing it and the arm which was cleaned and re lubed it works just fine. The lens that was found in there was from the factory since no adhesive was on it. Just a big whoops for a Canon employee
