New RFF member with a Canonet problem -- my QL17 GIII will not fire a flash from the hot shoe. The flash works fine from the PC connection, but I'd like to have a working hot shoe. Looking at the wiring diagram and schematic, this doesn't make sense as the shoe is before the plug in the flash circuit. Any suggestions?

Hi,
Welcome to the forum. I would take the top off. (various threads here with the info). Use a small multimeter to check the contacts between the various parts. If the socket is working and not the hotshoe, there has to be a dead contact under there somewhere. I would try where the wire is soldered to the shoe first.

Thanks Kim -- I took the top off, and a quick visual inspection didn't show anything obvious, so I'll invest in a multimeter, and do more detailed testing.

Fixed the problem (didn't think to document the process with my digicam). There is a contact attached to the PC socket cover that kills the hot shoe when the PC socket is in use. The contact was bent so it never completed the circuit when the cover was closed. I carefully bent the contact back into the correct position, and now the hot shoe works again.
