Canonet QL17 GIII meter deflection

Re-posted here following advice!

As soon as my QL17 is put in A mode, the meter needle deflects all the way to bottom. This suggests to me that there is a short circuit somewhere.

Any suggestions where this is likely to be?

I know that's a vague question, but if anyone has similarly found themselves with a camera with a pinched wire or something and can save me time painfully working it over with a multimeter I'd be overjoyed.

Thanks. That's not shorting, though - in fact it's open. Or it was when I checked - at the weekend I had a go at a repair with some conductive paste, but haven't had a chance to test it since then.

I assumed that would only affect flash timing, since it's it's on the focus ring. Why would it affect metering generally?

Flash exposure is mechanical.
The GN is set with the blue numbers and as the lens is focused the aperture varies. The Glll had a dedicated flash that may have to be in place to work.
As I recall*, as the focus was adjusted, the needle would move showing the taking aperture.

*memory's the second thing to go. Don't ask about the first.
