Hi Everyone,

Earlier this summer I bought a used Canonet for about $12. It needed some TLC but otherwise in decent working condition.

Well, I fixed the seals and cleaned the internal RF glass till it sparkled. Things were looking up until.... moved the self-timer lever and the shutter became stuck.

Well, I have searched and scoured the web and tried my best to follow the tutorials on disassembling the lens, but to no avail as the lens element retaining rings were very tightly threaded and I didn't have the right kind of spanner to reach far enough into the camera (or the means to manufacture said spanner). So it sat, as broken cameras are wont to do.

Finally tonight, I had some time to fiddle with it and came to the same roadblocks as before. Defeated again I put it back together and out of desperation I took the tin can of zippo fluid (aka Naptha?) and put a couple drops right on the self-timer tab.

I spent the next minute or two twisting the shutter and aperture rings while pressing the shutter to no avail. Then I took a pliers and gently pulled and manipulated the lever in some different directions. That didn't do much either. Finally I started to bang the camera on my palm and on a lightly padded surface while holding the shutter button down - and then it happened.... buzzzzzzz...... .. buz .. .... click!

Repeated firings were successful. While I'm sure there are several of you here that will cringe while reading this story, there are others out there with the same problem that do not have the necessary tools to do the job and can't justify the expense of a professional repair. Maybe it was dumb luck but it's worth a shot before tossing it in the trash! It's not like there aren't tons more broken Canonets out there.

Now to run a test roll to see if everything else still works.
If it does I'll cement the self-timer lever in place and re-skin this baby with something nice! Hopefully this helps someone else before they toss their broken Canonet away.

This brings a smile to my Scotch heart. It's when you've nothing to loose that you can throw caution to the wind. Good luck, Peter

Sticky self-timers are the bane of compact cameras everywhere. Congrats on getting yours running again.
