Hi All,

I am new to these forums and have recently become really interested in the Canonet QL17.

I thought I would check in here before I decided to search ebay.

I am in the UK btw.

Thanks,
Hank

I have the GIII model of QL17 and love it!

Many of the others here feel the same too.

Only thing I would be careful of is that many of those on E-Pray are showing their age, as in rotten light seals and sticky shutters.

Yeah, that is one of the reasons I came here first. Hopefully I can find a kind soul with one to spare.

Cameras on ebay are a CRAP shoot at best.

My Oly XA2 is perfect and I love it. I Cannot make my Kiev 35a work and who knows about the Yashica Electro that is headed my way.

You might look for any that are sold by an Ebay user named Interslice. He's been known to sell GIIIs that have been re-worked and are in good condition occasionally.

He also sells a very good cut-to-fit light seal kit for the GIII.

Well, if you get one on ebay for a good price, you can always do the relatively easy light-seal fix and lens cleaning work yourself. There are a lot of resources on the web for stuff like that, since it's such a popular camera.

I might be able to find one. If not, I should be able to help with a CLA if you get a "dodgy" one. You can normally pick up the "untested" or dodgy seals ones quite cheaply.

Hi Hank - I purchased a QL17 for about $65 US plus shipping. It was adveritsed to be in perfect shape. The facts are it was in good shape, not perfect. The shutter hung at the 1/4 sec. speed, the light seals were all but gone and the battery was leaking badly. I put two rolls of film throught the camera before deciding to keep it. A CLA at a local (Dallas, Tx.) shop cost another $65. He cleaned and adjusted the shutter, replaced the light seals and replaced the leaking battery with a new 1.5v battery. He also adjusted the light meter for the higher voltage and cleaned and adjusted the rangefinder cell. So for about $130 I have a nifty sharp lensed RF that I have no complaints about. With some planning you can do the same.

I got a good one from Ebay as well. Don't remember the price, but I'm cheap.

It's a very nice camera, but be prepared for light seal replacement (easy to do yourself, using the kit you find on ebay as well.

Also you may encounter some minor ennoyances, like dials or rings operating stiffly (on mine, the ISO lever is very hard to operate).

Another issue may be the flash setting, which operates the aperture, based on distance setting.

Can I extend on this topic?

If you open the bottom plate, you can see two electrical contacts sliding over the focusing ring. They provide the signal to set the aperture. When I move the focusing ring, the meter jumps up and down like crazy, so definitely, one of those contacts is bad. I tried rubbing the contacts and the ring with sand paper, but this didn't work. Does anyone know how this works or how it can be repaired?

I'm not an expert on this, but if I am correct, the slider on the focus ring is only supposed to affect the operation of the Canolite flash.

Here's the electrical schematic if that will help you.

Make sure you get one with a good front element. There are quite a few out there with scratched ones. Most of the other problems can be solved but not that.

One of the fine users here has offered to sell me his. This one has been serviced, so it should arrive in good shape. The pictures taken with it look really nice as well.

Can't wait :)

Thanks for that Kim , Just picked a QL up on Eb*y with a jammed wind on for 99p , Hopefully it will be an easy fix  but at least I have a manual for it now :D
