At long last I have managed to get the time to scan the repair manual for the early Canonets. There is still a bit of work to do to clean up the text and images but as I have had several requests, I thought I would upload a draft to my website.
Available here is anyone needs it.

You are welcome. Oh well just another 180 pages or so to cover the QL series, the 28 and a few others and I will have done the whole manual!!

And I just boxed up my QL17 today to send to a friend of mine. Could've used this to figure out why the meter would cut off in manual. Oh well, I told him if there is anything about it he didn't like to send it back, and I would fix it. So maybe I'll get to use the repair manual after all. Or if I get another old Canonet. Many thanks for doing this.

Hi,
The instruction manual is also on my site
There is nothing wrong with your camera. The meter only indicates in auto mode.

Thanks Kim. I didn't get a manual for it so that came as a surprise. Doesn't really make much sense, unles it was a design feature to cut off the meter circuit when the camera was not being used. I have a nice little BEWI Piccolo meter that mounts in the accessory shoe, and from the photos I took, it aparently is still acurate. It helps that it was stored in it's leather case all these years so that the selenium cell hasn't worn out. Guess I won't be getting the camera back. But I've still got the BEWI to use on my Kodak Signet 40.

Just got a report back on the QL17 I sent to a friend of mine, and it looks like I won't be getting it back. He raved about the bright clean viewfinder (thanks to moi), and was looking forward to shooting it. Sometimes you can get lucky without a repair manual to go by, but for anything more than a good cleaning, I wouldn't tempt it. Thanks again Kim for posting the manual. I may just have to look for another QL17 to play with.
