Canons and handstraps - a warning

I have a Canon 7, and I'd been fooling around with one of those hand strap arrangements that screw into the tripod socket. I found this nicely machined washer looking thing on my floor. What the hell is that? Turns out the rubber washer glued onto the metal handstrap attachment had unscrewed the bushing around the tripod hole on my canon. It's a black round thing with two pin face holes to loosen and tighten it.

Dunno if it's just the 7, other brands might have a similar setup too. It'd seriously suck to lose the thing, so I hope I can save somebody from that.

Thanks for the heads up. I have a new-to-me Canon 7 and one of those straps. They won't be coming together any time soon.

Cool, happy to help. Check the flash sync socket too, mine was a little loose. The inner part with the slots is the part that tightens, not the outer bayonet part.

With a thread the same size as the camera socket (no 1/4 to 3/8 adapter) and a freely rotating swivel to the strap I've never seen the hint of a problem with Leicas in 40+ years, though I do check the tightness of the screw periodically -- sort of high-tech komboloi (worry beads).

Cheers, Roger. Yes, as far as I know Leicas don't have the bushing. The Canon 7 looks like this.

Ahhh.... Thanks. It's decades since I last owned a Canon. My post was really aimed at anyone who thought that wrist straps were inherently a problem. I see more clearly now the way in which your warning was indeed Canon-specific (and as I recall, not all Canons at that). Sorry for what may have been an over-hasty reply. Even so, I hope it will set at rest the minds of owners of other cameras.

FWIW - I've used wrist straps on the FSU Barnacks for years without any problem...

and these also have that 3/8-to-1/4 adapter in the tripod mount.
(And no strap lugs.)

But, as Dr Hicks said, "...check the tightness of the screw periodically.."

Put some Loctite threadlocker on the threads of the adapter/ bushing and the screw or bolt of the handstrap.....or use a Leicagoodies.com sling instead!!
