Here's a tip. I use Nikon Scan 4.0.3 on Windows 7 and have never felt the need to try other software. The software wasn't designed for Windows 7 but works fine. Except for one thing: ICE. An error will occur if you attempt to scan a scan with ICE turned on. But there's a workaround to make it work. First, you have to preview scan the scan with ICE turned on, then you can scan the scan with ICE turned on. For colour neg film, I batch preview the entire roll with ICE turned on, then batch scan the entire roll with ICE turned on. Works fine, and the total preview + scan time is about the same as regular scanning (with the added step of having to manually start scanning when previewing finishes).

Actually, yes it is your job. If you're going to tell someone he needs to spend hundreds of dollars for something then it is certainly not unreasonable for him to ask you for some proof, like sample images.
The internet is full of puffed-up self-described experts, and many of them don't know what they're talking about. I'm not saying you're one of those people; I know you are knowledgeable, but the OP doesn't know you. Asking him to put down serious money because someone online says there's a 'night and day difference' is not being a good friend to him, and RFF is a group of friends and potential friends.

I have a Nikon 8000ED scanner, which is basically the medium format version of your new 5000ED. I've used it for 16 yrs now! Here is my advice:
For color slides, Nikon Scan gives me better color than Vuescan does. Color negs were always a pain in Nikon Scan; Vuescan worked better for them. For black and white film, I prefer Vuescan, but Nikon scan is ok if you don't want to spend the $$ for Vuescan.

I don't have one for Nikon Scan. Unfortunately, Nikon Scan will not run on Macs that use Intel Processors. I have used a Mac Pro for many years now, so I have had to use Vuescan for everything since then.

Older plusteks like the 7200 can be found around used for 50€ or so, with patience.
Should look for one... Lab scans add up quick.
