Can't Focus with Voigtlander Super-Wide-Heliar 4.5/15

Hi all,

I recently purchased a Voigtlander Super-Wide-Heliar 4.5/15. It is the screw-on ltm model. I'm using it on the RD-1 with the ltm to m adapter. I can't focus this lens in the rangefinder. Has anyone had the same experience?

The 15mm CV is not rangefinder coupled. You need to guess the distance.

It's pretty easy to do with this lens, the DOF is so deep you can use the scale on the lens and pretty much just point and shoot.

With a not too slow film you can even make a fixed snapshot setting - select f8 or f11, rotate the infinitiy sign to the 8 or 11 mark (hyperfocal) - and you have a DOF from 50cm or even less to infinity. Really no rangefinder coupling needed...

Sometimes it happens I unfocus it unintentionally. It's a pity the focus barrel can not be fixed - couldn't this be a wishlist topic for mr. K of Cosina?...

Yea, everybody has that trouble. 12mm is the same.


Learn to estimate. 45 deg down eyes make a 45/45/90 triangle. The two legs are the same, eye level to floor and toes to imaginary spot. My arm span is 6 feet. My kitchen is 10 x20. I have memorised what these distances look like. My house is on a 75 foot lot. Our swim pool is 25 yards. My normal stride is 2.5 feet. 5 steps is 12.5 feet.

Practice with a RF coupled lens.

BTW, the 25 is not coupled either. I never took an out of focus shot with any of them.

It is if you use CR2's Raw converter only. The vignette controlls aren't aggressive enough to remove all the vignetting (if thats what you want). The best way to do it would be to create a custom gradiant filter in photoshop and do a batch process.

But your right, vignetting shouldn't be as big an issue as it was in the days of film.

As much as I don't mind some vigentting, I do find it quite a problem on the R-D1. The EpsonRAW software has a good tool to remove the vignetting but I can't use it in a standard setting as every image needs different strength. To have to go through every image shot with the 15/4.5 and select how strongly I want the vignetting removed is IMO a pain.
