I'm considering a Summicron-C 40mm lens. I understand this has a 39mm thread and a 0.75 pitch, which makes it harder to find caps and filters than the Rokkor 40mm lenses. I'm not a hood kind of guy, so really just want something to protect the lens. Is there somewhere in the UK I can get a filter or ideally a lens cap which will fit directly onto the lens?

A regular modern Leica clip on cap- like for the Summicron 50 will go right on fine, and the hood/cap for the new collapsable 50/2.8 apparently works well also, though I haven't tried this combo yet. There is a ring that will hold a series 5.5 filter and thread properly onto this lens, rumor has it a 39mm filter removed from the mount will fit in this ring also, again untried by me. I'm leaning towards the ring and getting a pair of 5.5 filters for mine- my two most used. Right now I have a regular 39mm filter snugged into place, and this has worked just fine- even with the metal Rollei hood clamped onto the filter I've not had any accidents. Not the snuggest of fits, but quite serviceable. A regular 39mm spring type cap rides on the filter also.
Don't let the threads prevent you from going for the Summicron, it is a beautifully creamy image maker.

I used to use a regular 39mm on it but found that because of the cross threads, it wasn't quite aligned to the plane of focus causing the lens to flare quite easily. I then got a 39mm hood from heavystar on ebay, this has helped a lot. I know u said u're not a hood person, but if u do wanna consider one, I can pass u mine (i just got the leica original rubber one) the next time u're in london. Its yours for a bottle of cider....

Indeed, the ring is the 11251 part and you can put the glass from a regular 39mm filter inside it. It's a little deeper than a filter so it acts as a little bit of a shade too - and you can clip a regular 39mm cap onto it. Works great (much better arrangement than the original fiddly hood) but will probably cost you a little bit more than the bottle of cider...

Szekiat thank you very much for your kind offer. Only on RFF would people be so nice!

In fact, I bought the lens, and it arrived here at work this morning. It comes with the Leica lens cap and hood. From descriptions I'd read, I'd expected the lens cap to clip onto the end of the hood, like the 35mm summicron I had used to. In fact, the cap clips onto a plastic threaded thing around which the rubber hood sits. The rubber hood is really small, and when retracted doesn't get in my way at all. So it seems there's no need for me to do anything 😀 I'll just ignore the hood, and use the existing lens cap.

Now to try it out!

I find that cap a bit frustrating in use, mine is quite a snug fit. Hope yours works out better. Hey enjoy the lens! It really does have a look that keeps me coming back, even if it is too small for my fingers.

You can't ignore the hood, because retracted it blocks the aperture ring.

I seem to be able to work the aperture ring with the hood retracted with no problems, even with my fat fingers.

I've shot a few test shots with the RD1S now, and am very impressed with the Summicron-C. This from someone who has owned the 35mm cron IV and currently owns the 35mm M-Hexanon.
