Capturing Emotions Via Series of Photos

Ricardo: Thanks for the wonderful photos in your series. Don't you love the looks on your boys' faces! Next time, try taking such photos without asking the boys to do faces; just talk to them about something they enjoy talking about. They will forget that you are taking photos ofthem. Thanks for showing us the photos.

Favorite dog falling asleep in front of the fire. Can't remember why the lighting in the last one looks different.

Leica M3, Summicron 50/2, Fuji Neopan 400 (I think)

Melanie: I am not able to see the photos. Is it only me who has this problem?

[now I see them suddenly!] The series also is very nice. You have a great looking dog.

I just scanned a new roll of Portra 160NC of Dana in her room and beside a window. I used an old and heavy Canon 85mm/1.9 lens at 1.9~2.0. I took these photos very quickly, and I lost several shots as out of focus images by this technique since I kept on talking with my daughter while she sat on a chair and moved around. Still, I got about 18 nice shots out of 31 shots that came out of a bulk-loaded roll of film. These are the first five images on the roll. I like the light quality and the colors.

I like the second one the best. The 85mm lens I used on my DSLR (Canon 300D) is my favorite for head shots. Although with the 1.6 crop factor is more like 135mm lens.

I am loading up some TriX now in my Yashica Mat 124g to get some nice portraits of my sons.

Ricardo: The cropping factor can be a problem if you have limited access to lens choices. I don't use any digital SLR by the way.

P.S. Here are five more shots from the roll.

The lack of the crop factor is what I love about my Canon GIII QL17. My 50 on my DSLR is 85, my 85 is 135mm etc. So I don't have a nice prime lens at a true 50mm. The kit zoom is ok, but I can always tell the difference between shooting primes and then using the zoom. Of course I am singing to the choir here on the RFF forum as everyone here is a fellow prime addict. The Canonet is a 40mm and it stays a 40mm! Imagine that. I would like to get a 35mm prime for my DSLR, so it ends up around 50, but I'm in the wrong forum to be talking about that.

Ricardo: Not really; quite often we see postings about the same issue that you are mentioning. Sometimes, I see a request for a 28mm lens so that it becomes close to a 35mm lens on a digital camera. In your case, you want a 35mm lens to become your "50mm" lens.

The CV 35mm lens is not expensive and it has a good reputation here.
I don't have one, but use mostly a Canon 35mm/1.8 lens.

Thanks for posting these fine shots. In regard to the first series I like the 3rd and 4th the most. Very honest expression and you captured it extremely well.

At the opposite end of the scale ... here is a series I took of my neighbour Helen, who is rather crusty at times and ran out of patience with me after about six shots! Taken with a Fed2 in her living room one Sunday morning over a cup of tea!

🙂 🙂

Keith: Excuse my tampering with your fine image. It is just interesting to me to see if an image can be slightly modified. Sometimes it works out well and sometimes not.

I loved your photos Raid ... she is a gorgeous child. I never had a daughter (two sons) and looking at these pics reminds me of what I have missed! If a photograph evokes an emotionional response it has succeeded admirably ... thanks for sharing her with us!

Pic no 4 is absolutely delightful!

Cheers ... Keith. 🙂

Keith: Thanks. I believe that all children [boys and girls] are blessings. Once we have them, they are there to be taken care of and loved. This is an important part of what Thanksgiving is about, isn't it?

Hi Raid,

No ... I don't mind at all in fact a crop of that photo had been suggested to me previously and the crop they suggested was almost identical to yours. I really appreciate constructive input and the end result does definitely have more intimacy to it.

Cheers ... Keith 🙂

The closer crop brings in more intimacy, as you said.
Here are new photos of Dana in a series.
I used XP2 Super film by Ilford.

Stewart: These three portraits are very nice. Her eyes are not looking at the lens. Was she instructed to do so?
