Side by side my old J8 and J8M had different apertures too with the J8M having a star shaped one. More than one site on the internet also adds that the M had two elements made as one reducing the element count although others say it doesn't. Maybe there was more than one J8M...?
I like mine and I get very sharp pictures even when (as above) I balance the camera on a curved armrest of a bench and hold my breath for 4 seconds!
