Careful if bidding on this M6...

He says the camera is marked "Leica M6 Ernst Leitz Wetzlar GMBH"

but it looks like a later one from Solms. I questioned him about this and he replied:

"Unfortunately I have no idea what you are talking about. Where
would I find out where this camera was made? In my description
did I mention where this camera is made? Can you help me clarify
this?"

So..I DID help him clarify, sent a message explaining what I was talking about, and how the Wetzlar cameras usually have this engraved on the edge of the top plate, etc. To which I got no reply. You see in his pics there is no engraved top plate, looks like a later production M6. Serial number is given in the listing.

Now, I'm no Leica expert, I am just a photographer who has used Leica for a long time.... So for all I know this camera could have the Wetzlar marking somewhere that does not show in his pics. But if you are thinking of bidding on this, be careful...or ask someone who has more knowledge than I.

not sure where he can find the inscription apart from on the box! 1997 standard M6. only markings on mine are on the back, same as this and my box has Solms as the address.

The inscription is on the top plate of the EARLY M6 cameras. I agree it looks like the later ones from the 1990s. So my point is the description does not agree with the pictures, and the seller seeems not to wish to clarify this. That's my point - be careful.

The difference is:

1. Would you buy such an expensive thing from someone who can't describe it properly, then does not write back when you ask for a clarification of the contradiction in the description?

and

2. Some folks prefer the early ones because they like the engraving on the top plate, some say the electronics in the early ones were not as good as in the later models (more likely to fail), the later ones may be less likely to need CLA, etc.

I got into this because I'm helping a friend buy an M6. We won't be bidding on this one.

I don't understand the links in this ad. When you click on the seller's name Ebay returns "This listing is unavailable"....???

Have you tried to click in the ad on the sellers name froom2u (under "Meet the seller") ?

"This listing is unavailable". I tried many other adds, this link always works!

Also, he has two feedbacks as a seller, from more than a year ago. Last time he bought something it was for 4.50 $. Now he has 5 photo equip items for sale??

But, maybe I've become a little paranoid... Seems to happen with peebay :)

It went for 1030 US$. Everything seems to be fine now with the links in the ad. As mentioned above there were problems with the links in the ad yesterday, but now the "Meet the seller" link works normally. Strange Ebay problem, it seems.

So possibly the ad is ok after all and the seller, although a bit uncertain of his "own" M6, is legit. Anybody from here won the bid?

Thanks for pointing this out Pablito, the seller also had a Summicron for sale that he had listed as an R but had M pics and description. I was set to bid, thinking it was just an isolated error (and maybe resulting in a good deal), but after the errors with the body I decided not too.

Well, I suppose we'll never know if these listings were legit but I'm glad if this post was of some use.

It's a later type M6; in fact 'made in Portugal'! They have not an engraving of the top plate. In front you can read the name LEICA.

The first type of M6 is made in Wetzlar starting from '84 ---'87.
They have an engraving of the top plate with " Ernst Leitz Wetzlar GMBH".
In front you can read the name LEITZ.
