I wrote a piece on my blog earlier today about my graduate school mentor, Carl Toth. I think of him often. Carl met with a tragic accident about 10 years ago, a head injury, and basically has no full recollection of his past. I recently heard he had a stroke and lost the ability to speak. So sad, especially for a man who was very cerebral in his approach to photography, wrote, and lectured often.

Carl's last body of work involved photo collage. Objects scanned on a color xerox machine, cut and dry mounted together. Extremely detailed pieces that dealt with man made machinery and constructions. To see them in the flesh was something. I, and many of his former students wondered what he could have achieved if he was able to continue to work into the digital age.

I post here because he was someone who should be known. He was represented by Light Gallery and then Pace-McGill. He achieved three National Endowments and was exhibited and published widely. He also was a devoted father to two sons, and a great softball player.

Google him and you can find some things, but not as much as he deserves.

I wish him god speed in his recovery and hope he somehow can have the recognition as an artist and a teacher that he deserves.

I, too, am a Cranbrook graduate in Photo (1984-86) and was shocked when I heard about his original bike accident. You are so right, it's such a tragedy for someone of his intellect. Life can be really cruel to the wrong people.

When were you there?
