Cases for Contax IIIa Lenses

I'm looking for individual lense cases for my Contax lenses. I carry everything in a Domke J-803 satchel. I can stack my 35mm Biogon on top of my 85/2.0 Jena Sonnar, but I don't want them bumping metal to metal. Any suggestions for lense cases? The other compartments already contain my camera, with 50/1.5 Sonnar attached, and the 135/4.0 Sonnar in the other compartment.

In the past, I have used heavy wool socks as a lens case. They may not be "Chic" but they do protect lens and are cheap.

You do have front and rear lens caps on, don't you?

If you don't care about authenticity, any old generic padded lens satchel (you know the little padded drawstring bags) will work fine & provide more protection (& less lint) than socks. Zeiss Ikon made nice suede leather satchels in varying sizes for the Contax lenses back in the day, but they're not easy to find (KEH used to occasionally have some & they appear on eBay every once in awhile--I can sell you 1 or 2 if you're desperate for genuine ZI accessories as I hardly use mine). Another alternative would be the hard leather cases w/snap closures that Nikon made for their RF lenses (the 1s I've seen have all been for the telephotos & wides); I've also seen (& have) a few generic hard leather cases that resemble the Nikon 1s..

Socks, PVC pipe, glued together rear caps. you guys *are* creative! Socks are a good idea. PVC sounds good, but I have too many projects waiting for attention already. And rear lense caps for Zeiss lenses are dear. I paid $75 for one to fit my 35mm Biogon.

I'm really leaning towards a finished product that I can purchase for a reasonable amount. It does not have to be authentic Zeiss. The Nikon rangefinder lense cases sound good, if they aren't too expensive. Any other brands that I should look for?

Contax also made a leather case that held two normal or wide angle lens basically side by side about 1/2 inch apart. There are two mounts in the case and you mount the lens to them like on the camera body. They also made a single lens case plastic "bubble" that had a mount insde the base with a clear plastic top that fit over the lens.

But, if you thought your rear lens cap was expensive, try buying one of these cases. 🙂

I might trade you for a couple of mine. Do you have any Leica M-2's lying around?

furcafe, I have an brown leather Nikon hard case that I you may have for the cost of postage, probably 4 or 5 bucks USPS priority mail. I just put my Contax 85/2 in it, and it fits fine with the front cap on; I don't have the rear cap, so I can't say if it fits with both caps installed. Another idea would be to go to REI or other outfitter-type store and look for small neoprene corded bags used to store backpacking lanterns and other fragile items. Nicer than a wool sock because they are lint-free.

Voigtlander/Cosina makes lens cases....don't think they make one large enough for the 85/2 but the 35mm biogon should fit one...failing that Optech USA make pouches and "wraps" which might be just as handy....worth checking out anyway.

Contact Stephen at Cameraquest. He will be able to tell you how well the Voigtlander lens cases will do for your Contax lenses. The wide angle cases have a compartment for the viewfinder.

I use various size Op/Tech soft lens cases. They offer good protection and are versatile. I also keep a number of their square wraps around for whatever needs to be protected -- I've never regretted having them around.
