Catherine LeRoy Dies

I was surprised to read that Catherine LeRoy, well-known for her photojournalism during the war in Viet Nam, died on July 8th. There's an interesting obituary in today's Globe & Mail (Canada's National newspaper, eh).

That is sad news indeed. Leroy was one of the first female photojournalists, and had courage among the best of them.

We corresponded about her new war photography book (with Don McCullin) two years ago, she was a most interesting and very gracious lady.

60 is a very very young age ... peace and good wishes to her.

There was a recent article on her in American Photo where she visited the subjects of classic Vietnam photos - hers of a soldier crouched over a fallen comrade, and Larry Burrow's wounded black Marine reaching towards his wounded comrade. Unfortunately the print edition has photos that aren't online.

Journalistically speaking she must have been a 'descendent' of Margaret Bourke-White.
