Change Your E-Bay Password!

I typed a phony password stating what I'd like him to experience, and it logged me in!

I think my computer just logged me in anyway.

Still... I'll change the password nonetheless. I always look at the url frame in my browser, so I would have noticed the same Stu did. And, as usual, I'll follow his advice.

Just because there's nothing wrong with it. 🙂 In fact, the same eBay people recommend that we change it from time to time.

I don't let Windoze store any of my passwords. Maybe that's why it logged me on as a guest when I tried that stunt.

I found some 700 Euro in my PayPal account for no apparent reason. I use PayPal for paying only and never sold anything payable by PayPal. So I reported it to PayPal and they locked the account just in time to catch the money before it was transfered to a banking acount somewhere.

Somebody used my PayPal account to collect payments from fraudulent sales not only on ebay.
He might haved guessed my password or got it by a brute force attack, I never answer the phishing mails but the password was on the insecure site.

Now the account is locked for investigation and in case more payments are in the pipeline.

This is not amusing since I have to make a payment for a meter I got from a fellow RFFer and I can't use it for the RFF donation 🙁

There are some trojans/worms in the wild which manipulate the hosts file in /windows/system32/drivers/etc. Every address found there isn't looked up via DNS and thus you can redirect anything to anywhere if you have access to this file.

Any more info? What scan tools can pick this up? If Stu is infected, he needs to find out ASAP.

One is called Mytob, should be detectable by the current crop of scanners.

I guess you cannot create an alternate account either. 🙁

Sorry to hear that. This morning the paper carried a story about phishing e-mails and, for some reason, when I read about your woes I feared you had been a victim of a scammer.

Good luck with Paypal! And with your purchase too! 🙂

Unfortunately there are tools that allow passwords to be cracked without brute force. Brute force can take anywhere from seconds on a weak one, to weeks with a good one. Some tools can find the stongest passwords in minutes. Be careful out there. Never store passwords on your computer. That is another no no. If a person can get control of your computer, tools exist all over the net to find various stored passwords in seconds.

It is entirely possible the above person's computer has been compromised, although it may be a house kid as already mentioned. :bang:

Unless Stu's AV wasn't updated I don't understand how a diversion could be accomplished. eBay is a secure site. Each time I turn on my computer the first thing I do is a Norton Live Update which usually includes updating secure signature validations. I would think this would be sufficient protection. No????

Ken, I was just browsing ebay when the login page popped up. I was about to log in, thinking that I must have accidently gotten logged off, but I caught myself in time. I don't know about hacking, but I think this kid would probably have my acct info if I didn't realize the page was a scam. I don't know where it came from. I run a firewall, antivirus, and anti spyware. Stu

Stu,

Thanks for elaborating. Certainly seems that someone successfully hacked into eBay. Scary....

Stu,

Go back into your history folder and go to the ebay pages you were looking at. Maybe someone wrote some code into their description that gave you the pop up.

Also, ask your teenage daughter if she has an internet chat buddy in California named jared.
