Hi
I will be venturing forth to North Carolina, Chapel Hill sometime soon and was wondering if anyone has recommendations for good camera shops (both used and new gear).

Thanks

Nick

The people you want to talk to are Captain Slack and Titrisol. I am but a newcomer to North Carolina, still being shown around. But I do understand that there are wonders to be had.

Camera Works in Durham is about the only non chain hole in the wall camera store that still has intersting stuff that I know of in the area. They had a Canonet QL 17 the last time I was in, a couple of XA2's, and some high end rf's that I dont recall because they were like WAAAAY out of my price range. Mostly SLR's like you'd expect but the did have some, which is more than you can say for the chain stores.

Try Peace Camera in Raleigh and Southeastern Camera in Cary or right there in Chapel Hill. Peace is the larger of the four stores (counting Camera Works ).

Haven't been to the Southeastern branch in Chapel Hill in awhile, but the one in Cary has a nice selection of Leica bodies and lenses.

When are you going to be in town? Maybe we could have a get-together?

Good idea, we should try a NC-triangle get together one of these days 😉

Chapel Hill isn't far, Raleigh and Cary seem like the other side of the world though. To think I used to drive that almost every weekend. (Go Pack!) I have to go pick up my HiMatic at CW this week. Stuck in self timer mode, had trouble finding a part it needs. I think I may see if its possible to perform a timerectomy, because the shutter seems to work fine otherwise, and I've always found self timers on cameras to be a nifty but little used feature.

Need to find out where the chapel hill store is. CW is open till 8pm on monday's, so it combines well with other stuff. If you're close enough you could hit Southeastern, Camera Works, and the little geodesic pizza parlor around the corner all in one swoop without taking too much time off work.

I'm pretty much free this next couple of weeks.
Just defended my thesis last wednesday and have to finisgh some modifications to it... but I can make it anywhere.

Tomorrow I'll try to make it to the BW group in Chapell Hill (7 PM)
Meeting Location: The group meets at the FALCONBRIDGE COMMUNITY CENTER
a PDF file with a map is attatched.

Directions from Chapel Hill are:

Take 54 east past Glen Lennox. About 200 yards before you get to I-40,
there will be a BP Gas Station on the right. This BP is on 54 and
Falconbridge Rd. Turn right onto Falconbridge Rd and go about 150 yards
and the Falconbridge Community Center is on the right (it looks like a
small wooden ranch style house and has a 2 foot sign by the driveway).

Directions from Durham and/or 15-501 around Durham:

Go toward Chapel Hill on 15-501. Go over and left onto I-40 (toward
Raleigh). Go about 2 miles and take the 1st exit (Exit 273), Highway 54
toward Chapel Hill. At the top of the ramp, turn right (i.e. toward
Chapel Hill), go about 200 yards and turn left onto Falconbridge Road
(at
the BP Gas Station). Go about 150 yards and the Falconbridge Community
Center is on the right (it looks like a small wooden ranch style house
and has a 2 foot sign by the driveway).

Directions from RTP and Raleigh:

Go west, toward Greensboro, on I-40. Take the Exit 273B, Highway 54
toward Chapel Hill. The ramp will turn you around facing toward Chapel
Hill, go about 250 yards and turn left onto Falconbridge Road (at the
BP
Gas Station). Go about 150 yards and the Falconbridge Community Center
is
on the right (it looks like a small wooden ranch style house and has a
2
foot sign by the driveway).

I'm off to San Diego (where I'll be meeting Fedzilla Bob) and won't be back till the 30th, but we could do it sometime after that.

Southeastern Camera has a store in Carrboro which is one on the same drag as Chapel Hill. This is no longer connected with the Cary Southeastern Camera, and may now go by another name. Last time I was there they had a Leica M6 and a couple of lenses. Lots of older film cameras. One of the better stores remaining in NC. Go Heels!

Way back in 1969, while a student at UNC I saw a Nikon rep crush a cigaret on a Nikkor 105mm 2.5, then stand on it. It seemed to take it. Wish I had bought an old S3 instead of a new Nikkormat.

Thanks for all the advise. How to prices compare to else where in the US?
I'm also thinking of.... gulp.... SLR gear!
I think I'll be sticking to the one in Chapel Hill cos won't be driving much.
No definate plans regarding dates yet.

Prices OK

Prices OK

I have gotten some great buys at Charlotte Camera. They have recently moved. They usually keep a number of film Nikons and Canons. I missed the best F2 I have ever seen at the Carrboro Southeastern store some years ago. A mint black one for $350. I suspect it would be much higher now. F3's seem to be in good supply almost everywhere and very reasonably priced. This camera had a 20 year production run and deserved it. If the flash sync were higher, it would be the apex of Nikon manual SLR's. Even those from the early 80's are still going strong, at the same time, the all mechanical F's and F2's have run into metering problems. 100 years from now the mechanical cameras sans meter will be the only game around. For now the F3 is a great buy. Welcome to the Tar Heel State, Variety Vacationland.

Hello all! Just to clarify... we are the same big happy company! The Carrboro, Cary and Wilmington branches all operate under the same umbrella. The confusion I think was that we used to have a store on Peace Street in downtown Raleigh. That store has now become Peace Camera and is not connected with us anymore.
Thanks and please stop by anytime everyone!!
Cheers!

Apologies to Southeastern Camera

Apologies to Southeastern Camera

Sorry about the mis-information regarding the split of Southeastern Camera. I was going on word of mouth, and it was obviously the wrong word. I really like the Carrboro and Willmington Stores. I have never seen the Cary store, which I believe is the main one. Stay strong.

Glad to hear it - and I'll certainly be by when I can. But you need a store in Wilson, dad nab it!
