This is the front door of a restaurant that has sat abandoned for years on East Washington Boulevard in Fort Wayne's inner city area. It was being demolished when I made this photograph. I had never noticed the name on the door before.

I made this photograph last week with the 35mm C-Biogon on Tri-X developed (N-1) in PMK. This developer gives the best harsh-sun tonality that I have ever gotten from any developer!

I admire you for documenting these 'events' I've done it too, but not like you. I'm working on a project to do portraits on WWII hero's or as most people would say people that were in WWII. I also do some of your kind of stuff. but not much is changing in CA, but it will come.

On the WWII project I've potentially have lots of subjects. I go to the Vets Hospital for a military related deal.

Anyway, I always enjoy your stuff and like your almost documentation attitude to photography. And this photo is great. (added attraction is the development info)

I hope this is not edited like a recent post for which I have had not an explanation. (And it was not offensive.)

Chris,

thanks for sharing, always something to learn from you. Can you elaborate on PMK to your work ? I believe it stains and tans so that the highlight doesn't get overblown.

The highlights can still be blown if overdeveloped or overexposed a lot, but PMK negs, when developed and exposed right, have better separation of values in the very light tones than in most other developers. Something else I've seen is a rendering of texture and tone that makes the photos almost look like you could reach into them. I used to ridicule people who said stuff like that about certain lenses, and I really have not seen any lenses that give a more three-dimensional image than others, but this developer does.

One thing claimed for the staining action is finer grain, but that is not true. Not with Tri-X, at least. It looks sharper than D-76 1+1, but slightly grainier. Like Rodinal, but not quite as grainy.

Here's some other photos:

Efke KB-100, EI-50. The light was VERY harsh with an extreme difference between the shadows and the lit areas and I exposed for the shadows. Should have reduced the developing time but the tonality still looks nice, even with blown highlights.
