Chattanooga

Going to Chattanooga for an extended weekend. Anyone have any suggestions on cool things to do/places to see? I plan on going into the mountains at least one day, other than that, I have no idea.

It's been a few years since I briefly lived there. But I have strong memories of visiting some of the historic battlefields of the Civil War. I recall Lookout Mountain overlooking the river and the city , and another battlefield called Chicamauga.

There's a tourist trap called "Rock City". You can skip that one.

The Tennessee Valley Railroad is down there, I was there in 2003.

I was there for one night and I was watching the news in some motel room and there were like 6 murders that night. So if you're up for catching action news. Then it's a good place to be.

Oh, I'll be up on Signal Mountain, which is a sister mountain to Lookout Mountain.

And I live in Chicago, so the news really wouldn't phase me.

Lookout Mountain is where Hot Rod shot the shuttle and the Decepticons launched their attack on Autobot City!

If you are in any way a semi-railfan, the Choo Choo exhibit is well worth checking out.

I second the suggestion on Lookout Mountain. 🙂

I always like to get up onto the top and the tip of Lookout Mountain and hike down to the bottom railroad station from there. The flora is spectacular ...
Take snacks, a compass and get a map.

The Art Museum overlooks the Tennessee River and is quite good.

When I was there they had the Hotel/Choo Choo downtown, plus a Railroad Museum and the TVRR a few miles away.

Yes, a few years ago it had a huge model railroad type exhibit. Kind of in the back of a hotel, IIRC. Some local friends showed me around.

Another thing that was interesting, is they drove me up to Dayton to see the courthouse where the Scopes Monkey Trial was held.

As I recall the old train station (choo choo) is a restaurant and the restrooms are almost unchanged from the days of grand travel on trains.
