Cheap Hood for I-22?

Is there such a thing? I've been looking but haven't found anything so pointers would be apprciated.

Mine is ugly, but it works. It is one of the little medicine cups that come with cough syrup or Nyquil. I cut out the bottom to make it a tube, and then I literally played with fire, waving the narrow end of the cup over a candle flame to soften it and mold it so that it press fit onto the end of the lens flange. If I remember, I put tape around the lens first so that the sticky melted plastic didn't ruin it. Then I painted it black and that's basically it. The end of the hood that goes onto the lens looks a little rough from being melted many times, but the rest of it is unchanged. The particular cup I have is great because the original bakelite lens cap perfectly fits inside the end of the new hood as a plug so I can use the same cap with and without the hood. Total cost - $0.
 
That's an interesting idea and I'll have to give it a shot. Of course it just has to be that I threw away one of those yesterday... :bang:

Dunno if this would work. And it's not especially cheap($154 US or so) but I came across this last night. Not sure how compatible and it's worth 6 or 7 I-22s?
Elmar hood .
I've been using something I made out of card stock and black felt on my I-50. It looks like crap and I'm pretty sure I'll end up losing the silly thing but so far it's working OK.
If you decide to try this let me know please.

Rob, I may well eventually get some Elmar bits as I get some Elmar lenses, however I can't see spending $$$ for a $ lens.

I re-thought that hood for an Industar after I did the currency conversion! I probably should post the page to the Leica forum, though.

That is a seriously neat hood, but I'll wait till I get a nice uncoated prewar 50/3.5 Elmar for it. Alex doesn't appear to have any currently, but his stock tends to turn over quick so I'll just keep checking.

Hi Rob and William,

I got the hoods last year and they were not listed on eBay. I basically inquired after purchasing a couple cameras or lenses. I think I only paid $3 or 4 each. The plastic model comes in two versions one similar to the picture I uploaded and a longer version - suitable for an Elmar 90/4. It could have been made for the Fed 100/6.3. The metal version is the nicest - black crinkle finish. The short version works on my Nikkor 35/2.5 too w/o vignetting.

I actually made some for my I-22/1-50 from cardboard. Roll a small tube in a diameter which would slip over the I-22's front face. It need not taper. It's just about 30-50mm long. Paint it black outside and flock the interior with black felt paper or flat black paint. It really works. See

This was the ugliest Z6 in my collection but it worked well. Inspired by Comrade Stoisha's work and the LHSA MP, I decided to try my hand at painting a camera. I've built tube amplifiers in the past and hammertone spray paint [Rustoleum] for the chassis and transformers is really tough and durable if you let it dry for a couple of days with the aid of 100W halogen bulb [just off and on a couple of hours at a time].

I removed the top and bottom plates and sanded them down just enough to clean out some rust and for the paint to adhere [no primer]. I didn't want to go to the brass surface because I felt it might reduce the temper of the metal. Besides the textured paint does not require detailed scraping or sandblasting. I did this late spring of '05 and so far I haven't had issues with flaking.

While everything was apart I decided to replace the nylon cover with Aki-Asahi Leica emboss leather kit.

I think I've posted another picture of this camera in this forum back then.

I'm pretty sure I got the idea from your(?) site. Mine aren't so pretty but they do work. And the only problem I've had with the homemade hood is occasionally it will pop off the lens or I'll reach to adjust the aperture and knock it loose.

Oleg sounds like a winner.

I was lucky and bought a genuine Leitz Elmar hood on ebay for $20. There were 2 other very perfect black hoods being offered at the same time so my "ugly" silver one sold cheap, and looks good on my I-50.

I think it depends on the camera a (little) bit. There would have to very few cameras that have the viewfinder as close to the lens as the three-window FEDZorkis. This means a conical hood will obscure the finder intolerably and you will regret buying it every day of its short and miserable career.

There is a Russian slip-on that is rectangular and thus may be satisfactory but I don't know why you would bother with that or anything else when you can get a kosher Leitz FISON for about $20. It is a proper clamp-on hood, is a short parallel tube, and fits I-10, I-22, I-50. This hood is worth getting even for a Zorki-6 and it is all-but invisible in the finder of a FED-1. I'll never understand why conical hoods were ever made. They are a stupid inefficient waste of space and materials. I can only guess they have a cosmetic advantage.

I have one like this. It was made for Seagull TLRs, but works well on I-22 and I-50. I paid RMB 5 for it IIRC.

DIY 40.5mm Filter Adapter/Lens Hood for Industar Collapsibles

Just for fun...
I glued a scavenged 40.5mm Polarizer filter ring to a [stolen from my wife] Vitamin bottle cap to make this Filter Adapter/Lens hood for my Industar Collapsibles. It's a slip-on held in place by small piece of 2mm foam stuck to the inside of the cap.

All in all, it's a pretty rough lookin' little unit - a Beater Hood at best. But...

The Main Thing: My Industars can now share the filters with my other FSU lenses. (or their hoods too, if I didn't mind the size.)
Bonus: When empty, it thinks it’s a lens hood. :)

Materials:
Small Vitamin bottle cap
Unwanted 40.5mm circular polarizer [or any other] filter
3/4" x 1/4" piece of 2mm self-adhesive foam padding
Gorilla Glue (Super Glue may be better)
flat black paint

1. Dremmel or cut the top and threads out of the cap.
2. Remove the glass from the filter.
3. Gorilla glue the front of the filter carcass to the top of the cap.
4. Mask filter adapter threads and paint with cheapo flat black spray paint.
5. Peel and stick the 3/4" piece of foam to the inside of the cap (where the cap threads used to be).
6. Clean up mess and hide capless Vitamin bottle from wife before she gets home. :angel:
