Well, yeah, it's at about fifty bucks a roll. My local film store told me that it would soon be going for $50 a roll on ebay, and now it is.
I'm tempted, but like Wooly says:
I saw this film on Freestyle's site last week, and I'll be getting a few rolls as soon as it's available (next week, I believe.) BUT, it's about 4 stops slower than HIE.
And that's an issue for sure.

I used to meter hie at 200, I think you can do about the same with aura, as soon as it warms up Im testing it out.

Interesting. I meter hie (I still have a stash) at iso 500 cause I like it's grain so much. I've only shot 2 rolls of Efke 820, and I like it's rendering, but I had to meter it at iso 25 to get any of the light spillage effect that I go to IR film for. Freestyle claims that Aura's filmspeed will be similar to 820's.

I never liked the look of the E4 infrared Ektachrome film. Digital IR converted cameras do a better job of color IR in my opinion.

I used HC110, dilution b for 6.5 minutes at 68F. It came out pretty contrasty - like maybe it would print with a grade 1.5 filter. This keeps me from pushing it any further.

I loved the old Ektachrome Infrared film. I got some great photos with it. That was 40 years ago!

That seems a crazy price for HIE that is that old. You can usually find it at $50 for 02/09 date.
The Efke Aura should be very good, but if you shoot it like the regular Efke IR820, it is much different - I rate that at around 3 to 6 on a tripod. I think the non-halation flavor may be practically a little faster - you won't need to overexpose for the halos.
HIE is very fast and you can shoot it with a red 25 rather than a R72, and results are very different.

i have been selling EIR & HIE for $50 a roll . i was giving the buyer an option to go to 10 rolls each. ex date around 2003/04. i have sent probably 60 rolls to Japan and Canada. My freezer is almost empty.

I have twenty rolls of EIR that I want to sell. At $50/roll, that could be enough money to do quite a few things!
This is not the old E-4 film but it is E-6. I used to use the E-4 film for special effects results on slides. I still have somewhere my notes on how to expose the film with which type of filters and for which situations [vegetation present, time of day, time of year ...]. I had a 95% success rate with this crazy film.

In my opinion, expired EIR at $50 is way over the top. You can still get it fresh - cut down from 70mm - for 120 and 35mm for about half that.
I have never used the color IR, I never desired the garish colors. But since it is available, I might just give it a shot.
The demise of HIE is truly disappointing. Nothing comes close to it for ease of use (I just use F8 1/250th) and developing.

I have 12 rolls with 02/09 in the freezer. I'm now less interested in using it at $50 a roll. Looks like I might be able to get a Focomat xl that I've had my eye on.......
