my chess partner and I are beginners pretty much. I am black here, and he is silver.

He cannot move, but says he did not lose, that it is a stalemate, as he cannot make a move, per the last rules googled.

What do you folks say?

It's impossible to say without seeing the sequence of moves what you did wrong but you have such a massive material advantage it is hard to image how you could have managed not to win. Endgames are frequently more difficult than they first appear. You've learned something: think it out.

Stalemate. In fact although it's a draw, most chess players would consider it a loss to themselves to sacrifice what could have been a good win.

Yes, here's my current checklist before doing moves now:

1. will the move put any pieces at risk?
2. is my queen safe and protected?
3. does my king have a way out?
4. am i setting up to take as many of the opponent pieces as I can?

and now:

5. by doing #4, am I ensuring opponent can still move if I don't get them in chekmate!

If silver moves it´s a draw, nobody win, the game is blocked and for experts its a technique to find a way to won´t lose. If black moves Rc8# Checkmate.
Regards.
