I planning to buy a scanner to scan film negatives. It doesn't have to be a brand new unit. Could you please recommend a popular performer? Budget $500-$550
Thanks

Just for 35mm or do you also intend to scan larger negs than that?

for 35mm only: minolta dual scan IV.
For 35mm, medium format etc: Epson V700.

I can recommend a Canon FS 2710 or 2720 of which some have shown up on "baywatch" for a reasonable price-usually less than $100. These have a DPI resolution of 2800 and you can download drivers that will ensure compatibility with Windows XP.

I bought a FS2710 at auction and it is ok. You need a scsi card ( which I had) and you need to get the WinXp scsi drivers online. I could never get the cannon software to work with decent results but Vuescan is handling the scanner fine.
The scanner is well built and my only complaint would be its inability to bulk scan. Scanning a roll of film takes a while.

Isn't the Nikon V in that range? Get that over the Dual Scan. No question in my opinion.

$550 on that auction site is fairly rare, I think; they normally hit close to $600 unless its well-used and maybe missing something.

Go with the canon 8400f, It's a flatbed but it can scan twelve negs at a time. It also does medium format and large format up to 4x5. Very flexable.

Hee hee, now you can't decide why we suggest so many different ones, right?
