Well-known
I've just read the sad news of Chris Killip's passing.
Killip was a multiple award recipient for his photography, widely exhibitied and for the last twenty-five odd years teaching photography at Harvard University. His most well-known work was a collection of photographs he made during the 70's in the North of England, where he photographed old towns that were once prosperous but at the time in steep decline. He used a large format camera that made him very visible but still photographed in a vivid and fluid manner that is reminiscent of small format documentary photography. His prints are gritty yet exquisite to look at. These photos were collected in the extraordinary In Flagrante (1988), a photobook which has recently been reprinted by Steidl. He was one of the best contemporary photographers. R.I.P.

Very sad. The world needs more photographers like Killip.

Another great that I didn't know about: a 4x5 street photographer.
