Was taking apart an Argus Cintar 50mm, and dropped the center element. Anyone know how to determine the front of the element?

Okay, if you ever have this happen to you, here is what to do.

The Argus Cintar 50mm f3.5 is basically a Cooke Triplet. The center element therefore has two diferent concave curvatures. As you look at the side of the element, you will see that the solid part of the element looks like a dark band, while the front and rear are lighter, because you are looking at much thinner glass.

The deeper ground side of the lens will have the thicker light band, and should face the rear (towards the camera).

Hopefully you will never have to determine this, but if you need to take the front element off, there is nothing holding back the center element, and it will fall out if you invert the lens barrel, like it did on me.
