I am rephrasing my last post about photosmarts.

Has anyone taken the leap to CIS?

The two suppliers that I can find are MIS, which is inksupply.com, and www.ultragamut.com.

MIS/inksupply seems to have followers on Pbase, and ultragamut offers a 100% satistaction money back.

Seeing that printers are not as expensive as ink... it seems like a worthwhile gamble.

Any anecdotes?

On alternate printing news, I sent JPGs to Adorama for their $2.50 11X14 sale, and, well, very good! The B&W was the best, and the color was good, but not as good (but almost as good) as my <trade secret combo>

Their RC matte paper is really more like semi-luster-matte. Test pictures with snow in them were excellent, far better than any ink- or lazerjet.

I found this quote on www.paulroark.com:

For the C88+ version of Eboni-6 and Carbon-6, click here. A C88+ with Carbon-6 is about the least expensive and easiest to care for B&W printer possible. And the images are 100% carbon pigment; so they'll have state-of-the-art stability. Just remember to agitate the CIS if one is used. My non-technical daughter is in her second trouble-free year at college with a C88+ and CIS with C6 "EZ" in it -- all year on a single initial fill.

This guy is pretty serious about printing, and I assume it is the same CIS

thanks for the information, john. with epson cartridges (for R1800) selling for the equiv. of $23 at calumet hamburg, the ultragamut ink solution looks very attractive. i'll watch this thread to see if people are happy with the results using their CIS systems.

greetings from hamburg

I used Jon Cone's CIS for colour printing on an Epson 2400 - and yes, you do need to agitate the inks. The big failing of most inkjet printers is head clogs, and that is what finally drove me away from the 2400. My Epson 1400 with MIS black and white cartridges has been very resistant to clogs, which makes me think that I should try a CIS again.

I have been using the MIS/inksupply CIS on an Epson C88+. Inksupply.com sell a complete kit that includes the printer, ink carts, tubing, and ink. Set-up was right easy, and I've been pleased with the output. I did spec b/w ink when I bought the kit instead of the cmyk. THe C88+ uses the "EZ" ink which is the black ink of your choice (for glossier or matt paper) and the same value of grey for the other three tanks.

I'm not using a CIS, but I'm a fan of MIS (inksupply.com). I've been buying inks from them for a while now. The Paul Roarke tie-in to the site has been very helpful for learning about digital printing and understanding the options and the "science" involved. IIRC, there's also a Yahoo! group tied (loosely?) to the Roarke site. I'm a member, but I haven't checked it out in a while.

Canon Pixma Pro 9000 and CIS

Canon Pixma Pro 9000 and CIS

Greetings:

I recently purchased the Ultragamut CIS for my Canon Pixma Pro 9000 which has 8 inks. The Ultragamut site was informative and the money back gaurantee is reassuring, so I went ahead and purchased the CIS. The unit came well packaged with mostly pathetic instructions for installing the unit. They left out some steps, but after looking at a couple of YouTube CIS installation videos from the UK, I dove into installing mine.
(Ultragamut...I can write you some great instructions if you want to hire me!)

I made sure there were not bubbles in my lines and the rest of the install went fairly easily. I did need to keep the lid open and tape a piece of plastic into the spot where there is a little trigger that tells the printer that the lid is down. The unit is not as clean looking with the silicone ink tubes sticking out of the lid. But, its hard to argue with 90% savings on printing. I am happy thus far and I encourage anyone to give it a try. You can just take the ink cartridges out and send it back if you are not happy, no changes are necessary to the printer to put it back into factory condition.

Best of luck.

Steve W.

I have C88+ and R2400 set-up with ebay Superjet CIS. I custom mix eboni inksets for BW for both. Works fine. After sitting for a month some head cleans and windex on parking pads, no big deal.

Thanks Steevo and SteveW, I know the ebony inks are great, being made of soot, they have infinite life on paper.

I hear good things about the R2400, but I think I want to go with dye inks. My dye ink printer that came free with a laptop is an HP 6500 and is producing the best pictures of all my many attempts at printing.

Note: this is confusing, my writing below may be wrong now I read that the R1900 is pigment ink -- or can it do both?

So I am thinking Epson R1900 because its color inks are dye, and black+white are pigment, allowing for "soot" use, which is well described here: http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/

This is a paper about using the Epson r1400 using carbon inks. My cognition is that the r1400 uses pigment for b&w, but dye for color.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, please! I am interested it attempting Roark's success, but I need to see that the r1400's color is better than the free HP 6500 that I got.

Also I am wondering if the two add-on colors that make the 5 color set are all that important, which are light cyan and light magenta. It seems that darker colors and yellow are what have made my pictures interesting.

This is a great thread, as it is time for me to consider new ink for my 1400.
Does anyone know if there is a company selling a continuous feed system with B&W ink for my printer?

Try these folks (link). When I bought my cfs/c88 outfit from them I specified that I wanted the B/W ink set. Send them an email--after talking to them on the phone I got the impression that it is not a huge company.

Hey, that might just be worth a shot- thanks for the idea.. Can't believe it didn't occur to me :bang:
InkSupply's CIS are two- or three- times the price of ones from Ultragamut. Maybe it's worth buying an empty system somewhere and just getting the all black refill bottles?
