I've only just noticed this ... we now have member ads (one line), random classifieds (two lines ... I don't get the need for this at all) and sponsor's ads (three lines).

A total of six lines of ads but still the same single line of (4) gallery images at the top of the home page! I know we are a gear forum predominantly but this seems a little over the top to me.

I guess people crapping on in threads doesn't pay the bills at RFF 🙂 No ads there so home page is it. Still better than most places though where ads pop up everywhere all the time ...

We have hundreds of thousands of images in the gallery. Their direct contribution to paying overhead is zero.

The first line of the recent member ads is as before. The 2nd two lines are random member ads - well addressing member concerns their ads received less attention after their ads were no longer on the home page. Those two lines give equal exposure to older ads, greatly increasing exposure.

The sponsor ads likewise help pay for the site.

I hate the random pop up ads that so many sites have. I will never inflict that upon RFF members.

Completely agree. And I actually like the new random columns - helps me with GAS, looking at everything that's for sale... 😀

After reading the initial post I was in agreement. Then I read the responses and fully agree with the new look now. It is much better than sites where you can't get rid of the ads as you drill down, or worse - pop up ads.

Good idea. I see my ads in the random area frequently.

Agree with Joe too. I can't afford all this cool stuff I'm seeing!

Seriously, what ever it takes to keep this boat afloat is fine by me.

I would go even further and commend Stephen for a valuable change to the website. As a user of the classifieds for selling I found it annoying to have my ad on the main site for a short period of time, especially since I only have time to post on weekends and other times when for obvious reasons a lot of other members also post classifieds. In my view this change increases the value of RFF ads. Well done!

+1 I agree! Thanks to Stephen and the team, I see this as a substantial improvement. Thanks for listening to our comments and input.
