Hi all,

recently my CLE has developed an occasional sticky second curtain, or to be more precise, sometimes the exposure is a lot longer than it should. This happens both using A-mode and set speeds. I'm hoping that its a mechanical issue, and I know that batteries should probably be changed as they are coming to be a year old, just wondered if anyone else has run into this same issue.

I'll try with fresh batteries tonight, but to jump ahead of myself: has anyone got any hands on experience in lubricating the curtain rails etc on a CLE?

cheers!

Jani

Its generally not a matter of the curtains needing extra lubrication but rather clearing out a build up of crap that finds its way into the rails. First port of call should be to open the curtains on 'B" and blow out as must of the build up in the channel as you can. Changing batteries is also a good thing Be sure to use Silver Oxide batteries rather than Alkaline ones as the Alkaline ones can get erratic with the voltage after extensive use. The Silver Oxides are more consistent with their voltage delivery.

Thanks for these tips, much appreciated!

as you described "sticky second curtain", can you post sample scans of your film rolls/shots. my CLE developed something like that description. but your further explanation isn't similar to my experience though. what happened in mine is that some frames had half frame with the image and half would be black. eventually this aggravated to some frames being full black, then further... all frames unfortunately.
direct lubrication and cleaning by some local stores didn't help. i then sought help from a US based repair shop which then returned it with a note that they cannot repair it. they had recommended a change of the motherboard.
what's inconsistent with a replacement is that all of the metering was working fine wc means the electronics were all working properly. like your description, all mechanical. alas, my cle was "dead" apparently.
after about 5 months, i finally found a local technician who said he found a small screw wc he tightened so that both curtains synced properly. he then put a small amount of cement glue/cyano acrylate to make it permanent and hold firm.
i'm hoping that this is similar to your unit's problems and can be rectified.
btw, i only use eveready alkalines on mine as silver oxides are not locally available. not much problem there, metering is spot on. just need to replace batteries more often probably than if silver oxides were used.
hope this helps.
i'm so happy my cle got "revived"!

Hi,

my problem seemed to go away with fresh batteries, so unfortunately I can't be of help. It seemed not to be a problem with curtains per se, but rather severely overexposing some shots (whole frame).

I also found how to adjust the light meter reading & automatic exposure, but that requires taking off the top cover. Amazing little thing the CLE is...

cheers,

Jani
