Just noticed this while cleaning a polarizing filter tonight.
Take a polarizing filter and hold it up in front of your eyes, looking through it at your LCD monitor (I do not think this works for older glass monitors). Turn it until the screen goes black.
Notice the dust and smudges. They stand out very clearly.
I cleaned them up and tried again - all gone.
I like to keep my LCD monitor clean - this helps me do it.
Weird. I did not even know an LCD would turn black if you turn a polarizer in front of it.
