Cleaning an SLR mirror possible at all?

Having previously searched for answers some time ago, I decided that pure water was my own safest option. Of course, that doesn't mean other fluids can't necessarily be used without unwanted consequences. Simply that there may be the possibility of variation in outcomes from type to type? The bottom line I suppose is that what works for you, works for you.

Agreed!

I am pretty fearless, but water with almost no [mild] soap is always my first choice. I avoid anything that will remove paint or glue, unless I am absolutely sure it will not migrate.

I assume the FE2 is modern enough that the mirrors are multi layer AR coated, which adds to the scratch resistance. I don't have one in front of me, but I do have an F3, which is from about the same era. I can clean the F3 mirror with lens tissue and either an alcohol or surfactant cleaner without harming it. But, as Sarcophilius has stated, if you are cautious, you'll do a test rub on the front corner of the mirror first.
