I'm sorry for my ignorance, but how are close up filters used with fixed lens RFs? I mean, how will they work?

Another stupid question--can closeup filters of the same rating (e.g. two +3's) be stacked on top of each other?

I used to use close up filters when I had a Yashica RF. It involved having the tables for the filters and measuring the distance from the film plane to the subject.
To speed the measuring with subjects that didn't like to sit still while I got out the tape measure, I made a wire frame of the correct length that could be attached to the lens.
I cheat now and use an SLR for closeup work. 😀

There were close up filters made with attached windows that covered the viewfinder and so provided the necessary adjustment in viewing.

No, not a stupid question.

Yes, CUs can be stacked. Add the numbers and you'll have the total dioptric value. This means a +1 and +2 stacked give the same effect as a +3. Two +3 CUs stacked give a total of +6.

The values have the following meaning:

A +1 diopter on a lens focussed to infinity causes the actual focus to be at 1/1 meter. A +2 diopter causes the actual focus to be at 1/2 meter. A +3 gives actual focus at 1/3 meter. I guess you can work it out from here yourself.

LOL, would it make you feel any better if I confess I have never owned an *gasp* SLR in my life, film or otherwise? 😀
