Clouds

Edinburgh this afternoon. Any idea what these clouds are? I can’t remember seeing them before. There wasn’t another cloud in the sky.

But seriously, one does see some strange cloud phenomena. A few years ago, driving across an empty area of flat, high desert, I watched a perfect ring-shaped cloud materialize over the space of about a minute. It was pretty low, and nearby, judging by the perspective change that the moving car provided. No other clouds in sight, and no human presence anywhere nearby. After about three minutes, it dissipated fairly quickly. It gave me the heebie-jeebies.

John Constable, the great English Romantic landscape painter of the late 18th and early 19th century, spoke of the function of the sky in a rendering of a landscape. He called it "the chief organ of sentiment", a wonderful notion and one that's always in my mind in my approach to landscape images.
