Clunk theorie

here you can see some of my first photos,
flickr,
the electro seems to work perfect,
but I have no clunk when I rewind.
May be some times there is one,
but not allways.
So do I have to look after this ugly pad?

Or what do you think?

I noticed when I shot I have to press the shutter releas button as long as the camera wants to open the shutter,
but this is only important in very low light situations.
Even the self release than wouldn't work proper.

I don't have any 'klunk' either but if I listen closely I can hear the switch resetting. I have decided to just ignore the POD fears.
As far as low light, I also get a wide open shutter when the yellow light indicates not enought light. As long as I hold the button down, the shutter stays open. Again, I just turn the aperture ring til the light goes out and just shoot.
These things have a mind of their own but one heck of a lens. I'll use the lens on my own terms and forget the worries.

The first images look really nice. At some point I would have it looked at to replace the POD though. Should have that clunk sound.

at wich point should this clunk appear?
at the beginning of the film lever or later,
after half the way?

Ok,
I created a soundfile,
(God save my mac)
and here is the download:

you hear two film windingws an two shutter releases at a slow speed.
I turned the lever a little slow, waited at the end of the way and let it slowly go back, than I pressed the shutter release.

Every time when I wind the film I can hear 2 clunks,
one after about the half way, and a second when I turn the lever back.

unfortunately the shutter speed seems not to be controlled by the electronic 😡

If this happens in Auto mode (not Bulb) it's malfunction. I have written here about my experience with this issue some weeks ago. Au revoir!

and how did you solve the problem with slow speeds and the shutter knob?

now the new sound file with a huge clunk

because the problem with the self trigger and the phaenomen that the shutter closes when I release the shutter knob,
I opened the bottomplate and adjusted the bigger black screw that it'll be hold by the camere untill the shuttertime is over.

Now it works perfect.

my problems weren't caused by the pad,
the louder click is only caused by the mechanism under the bottomplate

The 'clunk' should be heard about 20 degrees into the wind-on motion.
If you do not have it then the pad is on its way out - I say its on the way out because the camera is still obviously working. You have been pre-warned of impending doom!
Once the pad (POD - Pad Of Death ) fails the camera will not work as it should.
Get it replaced and all will be well for at least 50+ years to come.

do I realy have to open the leathercovering for identify the bad pad?
Some say it's vissible from above when oppened the topplate,
but how and where?

The best way to get to the POD is from the front with the covering peeled back etc.

Yes, you can access it from the top so I am told but access is tight - the front is best. Always give yourself room to work.

Go to yashicaguy.com and get the how-to from there. Not really all that hard to do.

okay,
it was a bad pad inside.

After my first repairing I adjsuted the screw in the bottem part,
and yes the camera worked quite good,
but now, after I had changed the old rests of the pad and replaced them with a piece of rubber it's better.
The sound of the cluck is less metalic.

I did that without opening the whole camera,
I only opened the topcase and made it like a chirurg in a hospital.
It was exciting 🙂

The very old electro 35 professional works nearly like new,
the next step is to change the grease from the focusring.
But that seems to be more difficult.
