coated filters for GSN to control lens flare?

I'm looking for something more subtle then the huge rubber hood I’m using for my GSN. I cut out a small portion for the rangefinder but it just looks horrible and stands out too much. I'm thinking of either a UV or a skylight filter to help control lens flare. I've been looking at the Hoya HMC (multi-coated) types. Any thoughts or suggestions will help.

Use big hood.....filter causes flare. I never use filter HAHAHA.

I went out and bought a B+W KR-1.5 Skylight 1.1x MRC filter for $30 at Samy's Camera. That's $10 more then the Hoya but they didn't have my size in stock. I hope it works well without degrading the lens because they don’t accept refunds on filters. I’ll just have to wait and see or I’ll be stuck with store credit. 😕

I don't think a filter will help to reduce lens flare. The lens is already coated and by using a filter you are adding another pair of air/glass surfaces.

FrankS, I respect your opinion. I'll just have to exchange it for film or something. Or I might keep it for lens protection and skylight filtering w/ the hood. I live near the beach and it gets really sunny her in southern California. It might be of use. Too bad there's no way around the lens hood.

I use an old slavaged metal hood when shooting in very bright sunlight - I haven't tried filters with the GSN yet but I tend to agree with Frank - I don't think they will directly reduce lens flare. The hood is a pain though as it does obstruct the viewfinder slightly and causes minimal vingnetting (I crop so it's not such a big deal) but if the filters work please let us know.

Thank you. I agree that this filter warms up a colour photo, but your question was about reducing flare, right?

Yes FrankS. It's about flare. I'm stuck with the filter now (no refunds) so i thought i'll make the best out of it. i edited my last post while all these replys were being posted so it might sound a bit confusing. I'll post the pictures using the filters (w/o the hood) when i finish my roll.

Buy a "55mm normal lens hood" here: http://www.thecamerahunter.com/

The hood is straight out and will not block the rangefinder and has a great satin black finish for about $12. That will solve your problem.

I've a GSN, and if you get a hood that is straight out more than about 3/4" past the lens you will probably get vignetting.

I'm very interested in some kind of a filter that has a multi coating to reduce flare like the coatings used on modern lenses. I'm in this thread now so let us know. If it does help I'm going to check this out. I was talking about this very issue this afternoon.

Kinda OT, but if you haven't already tried, the Used Camera Store in Newport Beach (or Costa Mesa) has a lot of random sizes and different types of hoods. I got an oversized one for my GS but I haven't looked there for a smaller one in about 6 months. It might be worth a try. I think it's off 17th street and Newport Blvd.

I don't really have any advice regarding the filters as I don't have any experiene with them.
